Fibre Supplement for Gut Health
A fibre supplement for gut health is the simplest gut product there is: a known number of grams of dietary fibre in a scoop, added to the fibre already in your food.
Fibre supplement for gut health: grams per serve compared
Every comparison on this site uses the same numbers: grams of fibre (or protein) in a serve, what that serve costs, and what 10 g of fibre costs. A bigger number is not automatically a better product. The point is to see the numbers and know what you are paying for.
| Product | Serve | Fibre per serve | Cost per serve | Cost per 10 g fibre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PHGG | 6 g | about 5 g | $0.93 to $1.32 | $1.86 to $2.64 |
| Gut Health Plus | 6 g | about 5 g | $1.25 to $1.57 | $2.50 to $3.15 |
| Organic Inulin | 5 g | 4.5 g | $0.44 to $0.68 | $0.98 to $1.51 |
| Gut Health Powder | 8 g | 4.1 g | $1.29 to $1.83 | $3.15 to $4.47 |
| Psyllium Husk | 4 g | 3.5 g | $0.19 to $0.24 | $0.55 to $0.68 |
Fibre from our 2025 labels. Cost per serve runs from the best value pack to the single jar. Cost per 10 g of fibre is the cost per serve divided by the fibre in it, times ten.
What the law lets a fibre supplement say
A fibre supplement sold as a food can carry one pre-approved health claim, as long as a serve contains enough fibre. Each of the five products above qualifies:
Dietary fibre contributes to regular laxation.
Each 6 g serve of our PHGG provides about 5 g of dietary fibre, making it a good source of dietary fibre. Enjoy as part of a healthy diet that includes a variety of foods.
Soluble fibre or bulking fibre?
- Soluble, dissolves clear: partially hydrolysed guar gum and organic inulin. Both stir into water, coffee or a smoothie with no thickening and almost no taste.
- Bulking, thickens in water: psyllium husk. It forms a gel, so drink it straight after mixing, with plenty of water.
- A mix of both: Gut Health Powder blends psyllium, yucca root, slippery elm bark and inulin.
Fiber supplement for gut health: how much fibre a day
The National Health and Medical Research Council sets an adequate intake of 25 g of dietary fibre a day for adult women and 30 g for men. Vegetables, fruit, legumes and wholegrains are the main sources. One serve of a fibre supplement adds 3.5 g to about 5 g, depending on which one you choose.
How to start a fibre supplement
- Pick one fibre, not three.
- Begin at about half a serve for the first week.
- Build up to the label serve over a week or two.
- Drink an extra glass of water every time.
Fibre supplement questions
How much fibre should I eat a day?
The NHMRC adequate intake for adults is 25 g of dietary fibre a day for women and 30 g for men. Food comes first; a supplement adds a known amount on top.
Is it fibre or fiber?
The same thing. Fibre is the Australian spelling and fiber the American, which is why you will see both when searching for a fiber supplement for gut health.
Should I drink more water with fibre?
Yes. Our labels ask for an extra glass of water with every serve, and psyllium in particular needs plenty of fluid.
How do I start?
With a smaller serve than the label, for the first week, then build up. Introduce one fibre at a time.
